Affiliate Disclosure

Last updated: 2026-07-17

BillShocker (billshocker.com) is free to use. This page explains how the site makes (or plans to make) money, and the rules that keep that money from touching the data.

How the site makes money

Three channels, in this order:

  • Plan-comparison partners. In states where residents can choose their electricity supplier, we may link to plan-comparison or marketplace partners. If you enroll through such a link, the partner may pay us a commission at no extra cost to you.
  • Amazon Associates. Cost-to-run pages may link to related products (power meters, smart thermostats) on Amazon. When those links are live, the required disclosure applies: “As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.”
  • Display ads may be added later; ads are always distinguishable from content and covered by the privacy policy.

The two gates before any link renders

A monetized link appears on this site only when both of these are true:

  1. The market allows it. A “switch your plan” link renders only in states where residential supplier choice actually exists. In regulated states — and in markets where switching is restricted or effectively closed — the page says so plainly and shows no offer.
  2. A partner is actually configured. Until a real partnership is in place, the slot renders an honest “coming soon” note or nothing at all — never a placeholder link.

When partner links do appear, they are marked as sponsored (rel="sponsored") and carry a short disclosure right next to them — you never have to find this page to know a link is monetized.

The independence promise

If you enroll or buy through an affiliate link, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never changes the data we show or how states are ranked. Prices, averages, and projections come from official sources (EIA, PJM, DOE) and are computed the same way for every state, whether or not a partner exists there. Some of the states with the most striking numbers have no monetizable market at all — they get the same treatment.
